What is the Early Start program?

What is the Early Start program?

What is the Early Start program?

The Early Start program is one of the ways that the state of California helps their youngest

residents when there is a concern regarding their development. The Early Start program

provides therapeutic support in the home or community to the child and family. The focus is on

helping the child (age 0-36 months) reach their developmental goals.

When there is a concern regarding a child’s development, the child’s parent, pediatrician, or

any caregiver can contact the local Regional Center. In our area, from Goleta to Carpinteria, CA,

you would call the Tri-Counties Regional Center and can be reached at 805-962-7881.

You may ask to speak to an Early Start service coordinator and relay your concerns about the

child and ask to have the child assessed (at no cost to you) by an Early Start provider. The Tri-

Counties Regional Center service coordinator will meet with you to go over intake paperwork

and then an Early Start team of therapists will contact you to come evaluate your child’s overall

development. Your child is found eligible by the regional center if they show a 25% delay in one

or more developmental domains or by established risk factors. This is followed up by a meeting

to set up your child’s Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) with agreed upon goals and

services for your child and family.

Our Impact

Our Impact

  • “Our twins were both diagnosed with speech delay at 20 months old. We were referred to the Child Development Network to help with the speech delay as well as some other minor developmental issues. Through the wonderful dedicated people at CDN, our children flourished quickly. Their kind and gentle interaction with the twins was comforting. Within 6 months one child was speaking above her age level and ultimately graduated from the program. Our other child graduated at 3 yrs old, talking up a storm! Our children are happy, healthy, active little talkers now. Thank you so much to the wonderful professionals (Jennifer, Gwen, and JoDee) at Child Development Network!”

    - Laurie Starks

  • “Finding out your child has a terminal disease is heartbreaking and can be debilitating. It is hard to know what to do next and life feels so isolating. That is why I am so thankful for the Early Start program and the professionals they sent out. The Child Development Network specialists were so knowledgeable and kind and were unbelievably free of cost. The weekly visits not only engaged my son in new ways, they also gave me something to look forward to and someone with whom to discuss my concerns. Upon my son’s passing I was confident he had had the best care possible because of the education and compassion that came from the Child Development Network’s professionals.”

    - Liz Beckner

  • “Her visits have helped my daughter tremendously. She has been my rock in encouraging me and teaching me how to help my daughter develop her motor skills.”

“My favorite experience with my child has simply been watching him learn and grow while participating each week in the early start program. His improvements have surpassed our expectations and we are so very proud of his accomplishments!”

“The best thing about CDN is their wonderful, friendly, and flexible staff. JoDee and Gwen are positive, helpful, and encouraging. They are also very easy to talk to and are great listeners!”

    - CDN Parents

  • “I really appreciate all the time spent and help given to individualize his care. Everyone has been especially wonderful, helpful, and attentive. I truly feel my son has vastly improved his speech and we are tremendously grateful for this as we do not believe it would have been possible without the implementation of your program’s team and services.”
